four-minute fragment 2006 A history ... is a short film shot at the ‘Holocaust Void’, an exhibition space of the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Visitors enter this majestic yet bleak structure through an odd entrance. Seemingly oblivious to each other’s presence, they move from corner to corner as if choreographed, unwittingly entrapped in this unfolding piece of theatre. A woman dressed in grey appears and immediately fades into the very architecture of the place, ostensibly sinking into thought. A young man points his camera upwards to capture what is concealed from the sight of the viewer, rendering his perspective incomprehensible to the audience. What at first might appear as a closely supervised piece of theatre, in fact is an accurate representation of our behaviour towards and relationship with history. |
